Messi scored on a magnificent free kick in stoppage time to give Inter Miami a win over Mexican side Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup, sending the sold-out crowd at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale into a frenzy. Messi had entered the game as a substitute early in the second half.

Well of this moment, Lionel Messi is a member of Inter Miami. On Friday night, during Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul, the seven-time winner of the Ballon d’Or as the best player in the world reports to his new Major League Soccer team for the first time. Messi, also in December won with Argentina at the World Cup.

21,000 or so tickets had been sold

According to team officials, all 21,000 seats in the newly expanded stadium were sold. Almost every seat was filled, many of them by individuals sporting just purchased Miami shirts displaying Messi’s name on the back. They waved flags with his name and number on them and shouted his name several times.

Although the price of tickets on the resale market was rapidly decreasing in the hours before the game on Friday, some fans still spent well over $1,000 to see the game. According to US media, some Messi fans spent millions for tickets to see him.  Some Inter Miami match tickets were resold for up to $110,000.

About three hours before the start of the game David Beckham was on the field recording the empty seats with his phone. Unofficial Messi jerseys were for sale on the road leading to the place, and valid Messi jerseys were accessible at the team store located inside the stadium.

Messi signed Inter Miami after four years of planning and two years of active pursuing.

It was “worth it,” Beckham said earlier in the week.
