21,000 or so tickets had been sold
According to team officials, all 21,000 seats in the newly expanded stadium were sold. Almost every seat was filled, many of them by individuals sporting just purchased Miami shirts displaying Messi’s name on the back. They waved flags with his name and number on them and shouted his name several times.
Although the price of tickets on the resale market was rapidly decreasing in the hours before the game on Friday, some fans still spent well over $1,000 to see the game. According to US media, some Messi fans spent millions for tickets to see him. Some Inter Miami match tickets were resold for up to $110,000.
About three hours before the start of the game David Beckham was on the field recording the empty seats with his phone. Unofficial Messi jerseys were for sale on the road leading to the place, and valid Messi jerseys were accessible at the team store located inside the stadium.
Messi signed Inter Miami after four years of planning and two years of active pursuing.
It was “worth it,” Beckham said earlier in the week.
